When you are choosing images to enhance the appearance of your online course, you may need to resize the original image to fit into the banner area of a given page. This article shows you how to access the upload/embed tool from the rich content editor toolbar and edit your images for a better fit.

Accessing the Tool
1. Open the page you wish to embed an image on and click Edit. In the rich content editor, look for the plug icon.
- Note: You may need to click the three dots if your screen is smaller (see item labeled A).
Then click the Upload / Embed Image option (B).
2. On the upload/embed menu, choose the source for your image. If it is a local image on your computer, use computer. If you have already uploaded the image to your Canvas course, you can choose Canvas. The other options bring in images from the internet.
If you need a fair use, free-to-use image, choose either Unsplash or Pexels. If your image resides at a public url, you will need to copy that url once you click the public url option.

The resizing option allows manual resizing or preset resizing (A). Once you have resized or chosen a preset, click upload and embed (B), and the image will appear on the page.
B. Cropping
The cropping option allows manual cropping using crop image tools (A). The tools allow you to change the height/width of the image, rotate it, zoom in or out, and move the cropping area. Click crop image (B) when you are done. This will show the upload and embed button (see step 3 above), which you can click to add the image to your page.
Alternatively, you can use the image ratio menu (below the cropping tools) to apply portrait, landscape, and square shapes to the image. Choose the best ratio for your needs (A) and then click crop image (B). The upload and embed button will then appear (See step 3), allowing you to embed your newly cropped image.
