Once you have used Kaltura Capture to record your video presentation, there may be parts you would like to cut-out or redo. This article explains the different options for the Kaltura Editor and provides recommendations and how-to resources for editing tools outside of Kaltura that most people already have access to on their computers.
Please note, to insert new video in an existing recording or merge videos, you will need to use a third party editor outlined in Using Editing Tools Outside of Kaltura.
Kaltura Native Editor
Kaltura comes with basic editing functionality that can be accessed directly through your My Media portal in Canvas, and it does not require you to access the downloaded videos on your local machine. The Kaltura Editor :
- Allows you to remove parts of the video, such as dead-air at the beginning and end (trim), or a cough from the middle (chop & splice).
- Does not allow you to edit two videos together. To insert new video in an existing recording or merge videos, you will need to use a third party editor outlined in Using Editing Tools Outside of Kaltura.
For step-by-step directions about using the Kaltura editor please see Kaltura Video Editing Tools - Editor Tab.
Using Editing Tools Outside of Kaltura
Before and After
Before you begin, you will need to save a copy of your video on your machine so you can import it into an editing tool and make your modifications. There are two ways you can do this:
- How to download Kaltura media items that you already own
- How to find Kaltura Capture Recordings on your local machine
After you have completed your video edits, you will want to upload your new video into Kaltura and embed it within your course.
Windows 10 Video Editor for PC users
Windows 10 has a built in editor that will allow you to do some simple editing to meet basic needs. It has more functionality than the Kaltura editor and will allow you to:
- Remove parts of the video through the trimming and splitting tools (trimming removes part of the video like the dead air at the end, whereas splitting divides the video into two separate clips which can be useful when replacing segments in the middle of your video).
- Reorder video segments, insert new videos, and merge them all into one video. This is the most common request we receive.
- Insert simple text and images
For step-by-step directions about using the Windows 10 Video Editor please see Edit Video in Windows 10.
QuickTime for Mac users
QuickTime Player is built into the Mac OS and allows you to make common movie edits:
- Remove parts of the video through the trimming and splitting tools (trimming removes part of the video like the dead air at the end, whereas splitting divides the video into two separate clips which can be useful when replacing segments in the middle of your video)
- Reorder video segments, insert new videos, and merge them all into one video. This is the most common request we receive.
For step-by-step directions about using the the QuickTime Player please see QuickTime Player User Guide.
Sample Scenario Work Flow
Dawn recorded a 25 minute lecture for her Fall course which was current at the time. It is now Spring and her lecture slide at the 7-minute mark is no longer accurate. She would like to update just the outdated part without re-recording the entire lecture.
If Dawn does not need to re-record the slide within the context of the lecture presentation she should use the Chop and Splice tool within the Kaltura Editor to remove the outdated segment.
If Dawn wants to replace the outdated information with a new video recording, she should:
- Use Kaltura to record a new video that contains just her updated content.
- Download both the original video and her updated video from Kaltura (or make copies of the locally saved versions).
- Import the videos into the Windows 10 Video Editor or QuickTime Player to remove the outdated segment and insert the updated video where needed.
- Merge and export these video segments as one new video.
- Upload it into Kaltura, and embed it within her course.
