Any user who needs to access Canvas will need a PID. Below are the steps for getting a non-student user set up in Gump so that they can access a course in Canvas as an instructor.
Does the individual have an Extended Studies PID (U number)?
Yes: Go into PMT, locate the individual (search), open the record associated with the PID, and check the Instructor box and save.
Update the Start Term and department.
No: Go into PMT and Create a New Record.
Select Instructor. Enter required information (name, email) and additional info (address, mailing address, phone number). Click save to generate PID.
Update the Start Term and department.
How does an individual/instructor get editing access in a class?
Step 1: Go into SMT and search for the SID. Add the instructor to the course (you can make invisible). If the individual’s name does not appear in the search field, go to the previous question and follow the steps.
Step 2: Wait until the 7:30 a.m, 8:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. enrollment refresh (which ever comes after you enter the information into SMT. Login to Canvas and search for the SID, check PEOPLE to see if the person has been enrolled.
Step 3: Send instructor Canvas login information (if the record in PMT was originally a student account, the instructor logs in to Canvas using their MyExtension credentials).
Where can an instructor develop or edit content for a course?
Has the section ID been created and has the instructor been assigned in SMT?
If yes: there is a blank course created in Canvas for this section ID.
If no: the instructor can begin working in their Practice course. When the SID is programmed and the course is created in Canvas, the instructor can import their work from their practice course.
