When you have a created a Kaltura video quiz in My Media, you can link this Kaltura video quiz to a new assignment in your Canvas course section. Follow these directions to link a video quiz to an assignment.
Note: You cannot use Canvas' SpeedGrader with Kaltura video quiz assignments. Instead multiple-choice and true/false questions will automatically be scored, and the scores will be entered in your Canvas Gradebook. It is recommended you have Instructional Excellence at ext-instructorexcellence@ucsd.edu check your Kaltura video quiz assignment before you publish it.
- Go to your Assignments page.
- Add a new assignment.
- In the Canvas assignment directions, it is essential to explain that students need to take the video quiz using a browser on their machines that allows ads, cookies, and cross-site tracking. Students need not change the security setting on their overall machine or browsers, but students do need to use a browser for the quiz that allows ads, cookies, and cross-site tracking. Otherwise the quiz may fail and/or scores may not be recorded. Students could use a browser they otherwise do not use this one time with reduced security settings in order to take the quiz. If these instructions are a concern for you, please use a conventional Canvas quiz instead of a Kaltura video quiz assignment.
- Under the Submission Type, select External Tool.
- Click the Find button.
- Scroll down and click on Kaltura Quiz. Your My Media page will appear in a window.
- Find your video quiz recording and click Embed.
- You will see the Configure External Tool screen again. Click Select.
- Scroll down to the Points field, directly below the Rich Content Editor. This is where you will determine the point value of your Kaltura Quiz.
Canvas makes each multiple choice and true/false question equal in value, and will divide the total point value for the quiz by the number of multiple choice and true/false questions. It is not possible for one multiple choice or true/false question to be worth more points than another.
Below, the Points field is set to 40, which means that four multiple choice and/or true/false questions in the video quiz will make each of the questions worth 10 points. Having two questions would make each question each worth 20 points, and so forth.
You must remove any Open Question and Reflection Point items from your Kaltura video quiz as they are not gradable items and will not be counted in your students' quiz scores. - Be sure click Save or click Save & Publish when you have finished editing the assignment settings. Ensure that the number of attempts your Canvas assignment allows matches the number setting you've set within the Kaltura video quiz configuration. You have now successfully linked your video quiz with your Canvas assignment, and student scores will automatically be recorded in the Canvas Gradebook after students take the quiz.
- Remember that your Canvas assignment is linked to your Kaltura video quiz recording. If you wish to use the same video quiz again with a different assignment, save a copy of the video quiz with a different name in My Media first before connecting it to your new assignment.
