Instructors can configure their course modules to have requirements and prerequisites for completion. This can help students complete all required assignments and interact with all module contents before being able to move on to the next item or module.
Adding Requirements
- Click the three dots for any module in your course and click Edit.
- Click the + Requirement button to start adding requirements.
Complete All or Complete One
You can choose which items in your modules students will have to interact with to access further content. You can set the module to have one or more requirements.
-
Complete All: Students must complete each content requirement in the module.
- Sequential Order: You can make students move through the requirements in order.
- Complete One: Students must complete one of the requirements you make.
A common configuration is to enable "Complete All" with sequential order so that students have to start at the beginning of the module and work through each requirement in order.
Setting Content Requirements
You can set each item to have a specific completion requirement as follows:
- First, click the + Requirement button to add a new requirement.
- Use the upper dropdown (A) to identify which module item (content) you want to add a requirement to.
- Use the lower dropdown (B) to select which requirement option you want:
- View this item: Students must click the link to view the item, which satisfies this requirement.
- Contribute to page: Students post to the discussion, which satisfies this requirement.
- Mark this item as complete: Students have to click a button at the bottom of the page to mark the item as complete, which satisfies this requirement.
- Score at least: Best used with self-grading quizzes, "score at least" requires students to complete an assignment with the minimum score you set, which satisfies this requirement.
If you use "score at least" on a manually graded assignment, you must grade the work before students can progress. Consider this as you set your requirements. Opt for a self-grading quiz for less hands-on requirement management.
- Click the Save button at the bottom of the panel to save your requirements.

Prerequisites
You can make modules available upon completion of a previous module's requirements by using prerequisites.
You can combine "lock until" with module prerequisites; however, students won't be able to access a locked module until the lock until date is met even if they have completed the prerequisites
- Click the three dots for any module in your course and click Edit.
- Click the + Prerequisite button to start adding preprequisites.
- Then, use the drop down menu to choose which module (with requirements) must be completed before students can access this next one.
Screenshot Example (below): The instructor is setting a prerequisite on the Week 2 module; students must complete the Week 1 module before they can access Week 2.
- Click the Save button at the bottom of the panel to save your requirements.
